Dewouter — (Full Interview)

Wrooks:Lets start with, Can you tell me a little about yourself for anyone who might not know you?(gaming and dota History)

Dewouter: Hello, I have been playing dota for about 8 years I guess, I have no idea actually. Before that I played warcraft 3 and before that basically anything. I’m pretty loyal to my games as I barely play anything else except for some casual fifa games with friends.

Wrooks:  What is it you liked about dota that caught your eye?

Dewouter: Honestly, I don’t know. I had a friend with who I used to play 2v2 games with and he wanted to  try dota, I did not have a good time rolling into it and neither did he, but somehow we kept playing a game and then saying we won’t do that again and yet here I am. I don’t know about the other one though

Wrooks: Can you tell me a little about your username and the history behind it?

Dewouter: It’s hardly a nickname, my first name is Wouter and in dutch de = the, so that’s it. I’m not really into those things.

Wrooks: When did you start visiting the suggestions forum?

Dewouter: I joined the forum to look up guides while playing, I had to know what to get. After a while I found out people were creating suggestions and I liked reading into them. I saw some of them even having testmaps and I thought that would be the future. When dota 2 got announced I thought this is ideal, testing can be done against real heroes. While saying this I realize it was the same for dota 1.

I forgot about the suggestion forum for a long time, until half a year ago or something and I thought let’s give the creation of testmaps another try and with all the tutorials available I got it working this time.

Wrooks:  Pitlord is the last hero to be ported. What type of hero are you hoping comes after him?

Dewouter: A good one, so the opposite of pitlord.

Wrooks:  Rumor has it it’s going to be some sort of mounted hero do you agree with that or what’s your opinion?

Dewouter: Sun Wu-Kung or something? We have been hearing that for ages but it could be. I don’t care what kind of hero  we get, as long as they are great heroes that are fun to play.

Wrooks: Suggesting is fun and all but have you ever considered any other parts of the dota scene such as the proscene, lore making, shoutcasting or video making? In other words, Dota has many other areas in its world a player could be a part of, what brought you to the suggestions forum over those other areas?

Dewouter: I’m not a good player so I never thought entering the proscene was a possibility, lore making might even be worse, we are talking about someone who can’t think of a nickname. I never liked shoutcasting or videomaking, so I guess it wasn’t a choice. I like doing what I do.

Wrooks: What about commentator?

Dewouter: I don’t think that’s something for me, back in the days Luminous worked really hard to get these kinds of things going and he knew far more about the game than me. I learned from him, I doubt people could learn from me, and if they could they wouldn’t be interested. But primarily, I don’t like doing it. If I would do anything like it; it would be something like that statsguy is doing, forgot his name but I like his videos.

Wrooks: What’s your history with luminous? or do you care to share?

Dewouter: His site, dotacommentaries.com, made me watch the first progames of dota.

Wrooks:  Lets get down to business, What heroes do you consider to be needing of a serious change?

Dewouter: Hmm, no hero needs serious changes imo.

Wrooks: Do consider Strategy Guides and Commentaries by players like Tobiwon and Luminous a good source for putting hero and item ideas together?

Dewouter: It’s a better presentation form compared to the old text guides we had to use when we got started, so yes you could say that.

Wrooks:  What are some of the thoughts that run through your mind when you review a suggestion?

Dewouter: I have a hard time seeing how things work, it really needs time to see those things, especially since abilities get more complicated than ever. I try to look at synergy and how they can be abused. I look from a technical point of view, what happens when the spell is cast, what happens after etc.

Wrooks: What in your opinion are some of the best suggestions on the forums excluding your own and mine from that list?

Dewouter: For anyone checking the place out it’s obvious that anything summer-penguin makes is very good. That’s why we have been creating a lot of his heroes. I think the heroes suggested are pretty variable but there are a lot of gems hidden.

Wrooks: Can you describe your favorite suggestion by summer?

Dewouter: It has to be Ratsumaru, the hero I first created for someone else. It’s a button masher with a lot of interaction and variable choices. When I look at it today I’m still amazed how I got it done, and I have improved over time.

Wrooks:  What do you mean you created the hero for someone else? Are you summer-penguin?

Dewouter: Not that I know. I mean I created a hero to try some things out, I called him Zidane and he had simple abilities like a headbutt. Ratsumaru was the first hero which idea wasn’t mine, or better said the first actual hero that had enough depth to be in dota.

Wrooks: What are some of your philosophies?

Dewouter: What do you mean by that?

Wrooks: Like, a saying I like to visualize for my ideal self is: I can put 15 minutes a day into my hobbies drawing, writing, reading, etc. I think Voids was he likes to do things himself and not rely on others.

Dewouter: 15 minutes seems short for that :p. I guess I’m trying to be nice to people so other people copy that example. I realise I don’t always live up to that standard.

Wrooks:  I think i have two from that. You think people should be nice to others, and the second is people should be the example that they want others to abide by.

Dewouter: Yep

Wrooks: Let’s take a break from dota suggestions. What other type of media are you interested in (Movies, books, tv shows, or animes, or comics)?

Dewouter: I’m not really into movies, don’t dislike them either but I am a big fan of tv-series. I liked the brilliant ethics combined into action from person of interest while I enjoy the drama from suits. Most action series will attract me, as long as it’s not too sci-fi or fantasy.

Same goes for books actually, I like reading realistic books, like John Grisham, David Baldacci, Brad Thor or Tom Clancy. I don’t like anime, and I don’t read any comics.

Wrooks: Have you heard of Vince Flynn, for some reason i think of it as vance but its vince.

Dewouter: Besides you mentioning him to me before I guess, no.

Wrooks: Some people find inspiration from music do you?

Dewouter: I like listening to music, but inspiration, no. I can barely play the triangle.

Wrooks: What are you interested in besides Dota and its world?

Dewouter: Hmm, I have always been interested in numbers but I wouldn’t call maths a hobby. Sometimes I want to achieve something with it, like creating a system where I try to beat the bookies. Sadly the profit is very small so I didn’t really feel like going on with it. I’m not much of a gamble either.

I did create a elo system for all the pro players like that stats guy, nahaz is his name, has. I made mine in excel and it was kind of intransparent because I couldn’t save all the player history since excel only allows 255 tabs… It got me some items, but the shifting ratios for item bettings made me stop.

I also like traffic, especially controlling the flow. If I had a working traffic simulation package where I could program system controls I wouldn’t leave the house I guess.

Wrooks: Taking breaks are good but getting back on track is a good thing, have you ever thought of doing statistics for the suggestions community?

Dewouter: No, because I don’t think it’s useful. Suggestions shouldn’t be made because people like something, suggestions should just be good. Most of the suggestors also wouldn’t care about it I guess. To say it blunt, they aren’t interested in statistics, but more in lore and icons.

Wrooks:  I think if suggestions were based off of statistics (not what people like but their drives for doing things) I think we could have icefrog’s attention.

Dewouter: Suggestions are like art, nobody needs them, some people like them. There aren’t writers, painters or musicians asking around what kind of art they should be making.

Wrooks: No but, some of them have a chance to get implemented and I feel with statistics the community could have a bigger chance of getting something implemented.

Dewouter: I don’t think IceFrog would check things out all of a sudden because we start using statistics, besides statistics are very hard to read and chances are people will draw wrong conclusions making things worse.

Dewouter: It’s terrible, he should be ashamed of himself.

Wrooks:   ←—— confused right now. Why do you say he should be ashamed of himself?

Dewouter: He is making up facts, pulling numbers out of his ass and it’s full of stereotypes. It offers no information at all.

Wrooks: O i hadn’t realized he was making up facts.

Dewouter: His numbers on blaming his team can’t be results from research and when those numbers are this round it raises a big flag. I think he wanted to be funny but he didn’t amuse me, but I get that some people recognise some his points and like it because of it.

Wrooks:  If you could get anything implemented what would you want implemented the most?

Dewouter: New mechanics, like messing with cast times or even an item that decreases debuff durations.

Wrooks: What are some general parts of a concept or idea you consider no no’s or redflags?

Dewouter: I’m pretty sure anything goes, but some mechanics need to be weak. But whatever it is, the community will cry about it. Especially when the mechanic is already in another game.

Wrooks: Talking about changes, what hero model would you change in dota 2?

Dewouter: I don’t mind the current models, I think it’s ok. I don’t really care about them.

Wrooks: If you could change a theme of a hero, whos would you change? For example, I dream of changing nature’s prophet into an undead theme.

Dewouter: It doesn’t mean much to me. I would be ok with no visuals at all, except that makes the game unplayable because you get no visual feedback.

Wrooks: If you were speaking to a new suggestion member what advice would you give to them?

Dewouter: Be liked, Cialdini’s crap is pretty popular these days. Review other heroes and ask them to review back, if you do that you will blend in just fine and you will enjoy your stay if you don’t bother to give anything you should question if you want to be part of a community.

Wrooks: How would you like to see the community (suggestions community) to grow in five to fifteen years?

Dewouter: It should grow, and I think it could be a little less lore fixated and more about actual skills but other than that it’s fine as it is.

Wrooks: When you say lore fixated and skills fixated what do you mean?

Dewouter: It’s personal for me, I don’t care about lores but a lot of people are getting great joy from reading or creating a background story so they should do so. You asked me what I wanted and I think the suggestions should be about what they do. Now that I think about it I want the community to understand mechanics better.. While creating heroes I’ve noticed a lot of missing information.

Wrooks: What sort of information do you wish was there and what information do you wish was exempt?

Dewouter: When an ability applies 2 modifiers with different durations, or 1 modifier with a spell that also takes some time there is mentioned 1 duration for example. Stuff you wouldn’t notice unless you actually create a hero in the engine, so I can’t blame anyone but it happens.

Wrooks: Before we get to the last few questions, what are you hoping to see in TI6.

Dewouter: I hope Puppey finds a better team around him. He is my favourite player and the current shape of the team is just sad. All 5 of them are underperforming and I don’t think they will get out of this bad form without changing things. Besides that I hope to see some surprising meta changes that proves everyone wrong who mindlessly spammed the same heroes in their games and tilting when someone does something else. I know it will happen again.

Wrooks:  What’s tilting?

Dewouter: Getting mad, sometimes even making your team lose because you want that player to lose. It’s incredibly stupid but it happens.

Wrooks:  We haven’t covered this yet, but what are your general ideas on Hots, smite, Hon and Lol?

Dewouter: I think I haven’t played HoN, played about 2 games of LoL and didn’t wanna learn all that stuff especially since everyone was so negative about it. Smite and Hots also didn’t make the list because I’m fine with dota.

Wrooks: Other game companies take ideas from other games and apply it to their own do you think thats a good idea for dota developers?

Dewouter: Yes, that’s why I’m terrible at suggestions and others are great. It’s better to steal something good than to invent something bad right?

Wrooks:  I agree that we should take from other games but for a whole different reason, I think if it’s good for the game you should use it. But as for inventing something bad, couriers wouldn’t be around if dota didn’t invent themself; lina and phantom lancer wouldn’t be around if they didn’t take from other media.

Dewouter: Inventing is good, but inventing bad stuff isn’t especially not when you have the choice to copy something good.

Wrooks:  I think its the mind of a artist vs the mind of a programmer. I have the mind of an artist so i see every bad invention as growth and you have to steal a certain way or it can cost you money and time. You’re a programmer where stealing can save time and money.

Dewouter: I’m not a programmer, it’s a hobby for me. I’m talking about ideas, not actual products. But the comparison makes sense since I tend to look at the product and no so much at the process.
